How is unit efficiency measured on Amazon?
In September 2020, Amazon introduced its Climate Pledge Friendly badge, which aims to help sellers and consumers align with environmental goals. It also makes it easier for customers to identify sustainable products.
What is the Climate Pledge Friendly program?
Climate Pledge Friendly is an Amazon certification program and part of Amazon’s green initiative to power its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 and reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. This is part of The Climate Pledge to meet the Paris Agreement 20 years early.
Amazon partnered with third-party certifications and created the Compact by Design certification. Once your products are eligible for the Climate Pledge Friendly badge, they will appear under your product title and in Amazon’s search results and product detail pages.
How to get the Climate Pledge Friendly Badge
To get the Climate Pledge Friendly badge, your products must be registered with a qualifying certification. Look for a certification that best suits your products and values. Each certification has different requirements and costs, and you will need to contact the certification body directly to apply and become certified.
Climate Pledge Friendly products are identified using automated data updates from certifiers. Once certified, you shouldn’t need to make any changes to your product data on Amazon to be included in the Climate Pledge Friendly program.
What is Compact by Design?
Compact by Design is Amazon’s certification program focusing on efficient product design and packaging. To be certified, products must be efficient in shape, concentration, weight, and packaging. This helps reduce carbon emissions by eliminating excess air and water.
To qualify for Compact by Design, you don’t need to fill out an application or get a certification. Instead, ensure your products have qualifying unit efficiency, are part of the Brand Registry program, and belong to one of the eligible categories.
Efficient products have:
Less packaging
Less air in the container
More efficient shape
Less weight
Waterless technology
Concentrated products
How is unit efficiency measured on Amazon?
Amazon calculates unit efficiency using item package dimensions, weight, and the number of units. Unit efficiency is defined as the total amount of product in the container evaluated. It is calculated as (cubed volume per unit) x (weight per unit). This is standardized across categories like fluid ounces in cleaners, loads in laundry detergent, and ounces in coffee.
To determine whether your products meet unit efficiency and qualify as Climate Pledge Friendly, check if they pass the relevant efficiency threshold.
