How to maintain existing items in your Walmart catalog?
Step 1: Download the Item Maintenance Spec
In the Seller Center, go to Product Catalog and select Items. Click Update Items in Bulk to start the item update process, which allows you to adjust product content, pricing, offer details, and imagery.
Step 2: Choose an update method
You can choose to update items using GTIN Match or by Category:
GTIN Match: Paste several GTINs (up to 5,000) at once to download a pre-filled Item Maintenance Spec for specific items.
Category: Download a blank Maintenance Spec for a selected item category to make bulk updates.
Note: Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) sellers will see an Update Items option. Choose Update Items in Bulk and then select Seller Fulfilled or Walmart Fulfilled before choosing an update method.
Step 3: Using GTIN Match
To download a pre-filled Maintenance Spec, enter up to 5,000 GTINs in the GTIN Match text box, separated by commas.
Click Match to verify the GTINs. Only GTINs are accepted, and they must belong to a maximum of seven categories at once.
To gather multiple GTINs, download your Item Report, then copy and paste the GTINs from the GTIN column into the GTIN Match box.
If there are errors, you’ll need to correct them before processing the download. Common errors include:
GTINs in more than seven categories.
Invalid GTINs.
Exceeding the 5,000 GTIN limit.
Once verified, your file will process. When ready, the Status column will show Processed, and a download icon will appear. Click it to download your file.
Step 4: Download a Maintenance Spec by Category
To download a blank Maintenance Spec by category, select the item category from the dropdown next to the Download button. Choose the same category you used to set up the items to ensure relevant attribute fields. Use the Item Categorization Guide if you need assistance.
Filling out the Maintenance Spec
The Maintenance Spec is color-coded by attribute sections. Fill in only the information you need to update. Key requirements:
SKU and Product ID columns are mandatory. Other fields are optional unless conditionally required for certain attributes.
Date format: All dates must be entered as YYYY-MM-DD (e.g., 2020-05-15), or the spec will return with errors.
File type: Save the file as an .xlsx to avoid feed errors.
IMPORTANT: When updating item content (e.g., images), you must include any existing images you want to keep along with new images. If only new images are uploaded, existing images will be overwritten.
Working with multi-select attributes
Certain attributes allow multiple entries, identified by a plus sign (+) next to the attribute name. Examples include:
Key Features
Additional Images
Color
Material
Variant Attributes
To add more values:
Right-click the attribute title and select Insert..., or use the Excel Ribbon to add a new column. Copy information from neighboring cells (rows 4–6) into the new column to keep the format consistent.
Note: Inserted columns appear to the left. Add columns to the right for end-of-section attributes.
Understanding conditionally required attributes
Some attributes require additional fields if certain information is provided (e.g., units of measure). Carefully check data definitions to ensure correct format and avoid data errors.
Upload the Maintenance Spec
Once your updates are complete:
Upload the spec in the section below the download area.
Track the upload status in the Activity Feed under Product Catalog on the left-hand menu.
